India has underscored the importance of maintaining peace and stability along its border with China, linking it to the growth of their bilateral relationship. This was highlighted during a meeting in Beijing between India’s National Security Adviser, Ajit Doval, and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Their discussions marked the 25th round of talks aimed at resolving the long-standing boundary dispute between the two nations.
During these talks, both sides reviewed the progress in their bilateral relations positively and explored measures to ensure stability along the Line of Actual Control. The discussions centered on advancing boundary delimitation and enhancing border management, while also considering avenues to expand cooperation across the frontier. Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to a political solution to the boundary issue, guided by their long-term interests.
The talks followed an understanding reached in 2024 between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, which aimed to ease tensions in the Ladakh sector. Since then, significant progress has been made, including the resumption of people-to-people exchanges, the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, and border trade through designated routes. Ajit Doval noted that the normalization of bilateral ties is contingent upon the maintenance of border peace.
While both countries are keen on resolving the boundary dispute, no significant details were disclosed regarding the demarcation of the disputed boundary. However, they agreed to continue negotiations, with the next round of special representative talks scheduled to take place in India in 2027. China emphasized that the boundary issue should be placed within the broader context of their relationship.
The timing of these discussions is particularly significant as they precede the anticipated visit of Xi Jinping to India for the BRICS summit in September. This adds an extra layer of importance to the ongoing efforts to further stabilize and enhance bilateral relations between the two countries.
