During the 26th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of prioritizing development and security within the organization. On September 1, Xi urged the SCO to enhance dialogue and cooperation to foster regional stability. He advocated for shared prosperity and a more secure regional environment, urging member countries to support equitable global governance while opposing unilateral actions and confrontations.
Xi highlighted the SCO’s achievements over its 25-year history, underscoring its foundational principles of mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, consultation, and respect for diverse civilizations. He called for intensified collaboration in various sectors, including trade, investment, connectivity, energy, and resources. Furthermore, Xi encouraged expanding partnerships in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, the digital economy, and green industries to ensure sustainable progress.
On the security front, Xi stressed the need for SCO members to coordinate their efforts against both traditional and nontraditional threats. He highlighted China’s readiness to collaborate with other member states to promote a comprehensive and sustainable approach to security, thereby reinforcing regional stability.
The Bishkek summit concluded with SCO leaders endorsing the organization’s 25-year development trajectory. They collectively called for enhanced cooperation to safeguard regional peace, stability, and prosperity. The summit resulted in the adoption of the Bishkek Declaration and several agreements that span security, economic, cultural, and organizational cooperation.
