Chinese President Xi Jinping has advocated for a new security framework in the Middle East that emphasizes cooperation, dialogue, and respect for national sovereignty. During a meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in Cairo, Xi outlined a four-point plan aimed at enhancing regional security collaboration, resolving intertwined conflicts, fostering economic growth, and improving international coordination. He urged Middle Eastern nations to take more responsibility for their security while opposing external interference. Xi also highlighted the Palestinian issue as central to addressing broader regional tensions.
China has shown its readiness to work with countries in the region on safeguarding international shipping routes, boosting economic development, and tackling the root causes of conflict. Xi emphasized the need for the United Nations Charter and international law to underpin approaches to regional challenges. Discussions between the Chinese and Egyptian leaders also concentrated on bolstering economic ties between the two nations, with Xi calling for increased cooperation in sectors such as infrastructure, energy, agriculture, communications, electric vehicles, green energy, aerospace, and the digital economy.
For 14 consecutive years, China has maintained its position as Egypt’s largest trading partner and source of imports. The trade volume between the two countries surged from $10.21 billion in 2013 to $20.79 billion in 2025. This economic partnership was further solidified by the signing of over 20 cooperation agreements covering a wide range of areas, including artificial intelligence, trade, technology, education, transportation, and industrial supply chains. These agreements underscore the intention to further strengthen their comprehensive strategic partnership.
Xi’s visit to Cairo and the subsequent talks are part of China’s broader strategy to enhance its influence in the Middle East through economic and diplomatic engagement. By advocating for a security framework based on mutual respect and cooperation, China seeks to position itself as a key player in resolving the region’s complex issues.
