China and the United Kingdom have taken a significant step towards enhancing their economic collaboration by agreeing to speed up a joint feasibility study for a bilateral services trade agreement. This development, announced during a recent meeting of the China-UK Joint Economic and Trade Commission in London, aims to bolster cooperation in high-value service sectors. Amid global trade uncertainties, this move is seen as a way to strengthen economic ties between the two nations.

At the meeting, Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao expressed a welcoming stance towards increased British investment in China. He also urged the UK to provide a fair and non-discriminatory environment for Chinese companies operating in the country. Both nations reiterated their support for a rules-based global trading system, emphasizing their commitment to the World Trade Organization’s principles.

UK Business and Trade Secretary Peter Kyle highlighted the importance of growing cooperation in the services sector as a key element of bilateral relations. He pointed out that the rapid expansion of China’s services sector presents substantial opportunities for British businesses. Kyle confirmed the UK’s readiness to deepen collaboration through the bilateral services partnership and the ongoing trade agreement study, signifying a mutual interest in expanding services trade.

However, China raised concerns over the UK’s recent steel import restrictions, urging a revision to ensure compliance with international trade rules. This issue highlights the complexities within the trade relationship, even as both sides strive for closer economic ties.

The proposed services trade agreement is expected to unlock new opportunities in various sectors, including finance, banking, education, professional services, skills training, and creative industries. Meanwhile, merchandise trade between China and the UK continues to flourish, with a 6.5% year-on-year increase in bilateral goods trade during the first five months of 2026, underscoring the resilience of their trade relations despite broader uncertainties.
