China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Southern Theater Command announced that it expelled a Philippine C-208 aircraft from the airspace over Huangyan Dao, citing unauthorized entry. The PLA stated that naval and air forces were deployed to monitor the aircraft, issuing warnings before directing it to vacate the area.
Huangyan Dao, also known internationally as Scarborough Shoal, is claimed by China as part of its territory. The PLA described the aircraft’s presence as a violation of China’s sovereignty and warned that such incidents could elevate the risk of unintended maritime or aerial conflicts.
The PLA has cautioned the Philippines against further actions it deems provocative, stating that its military remains on heightened alert to defend China’s territorial claims and security interests. Beijing’s assertion of sovereignty over Huangyan Dao is part of its broader territorial claims in the South China Sea, a region characterized by competing claims from several countries, including the Philippines.
This incident underscores ongoing tensions between China and the Philippines in the disputed South China Sea region. The area is strategically significant and rich in resources, making it a focal point of regional maritime disputes.
