China has voiced strong opposition to a proposed U.S. bill that aims to impose sanctions on major purchasers of Russian oil and natural gas, a move that would affect some of China’s key energy transactions. The Chinese government has vowed to take all necessary actions to safeguard the legitimate interests of its companies involved in these trades.
Addressing the issue, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian reiterated China’s firm stance against what it considers unilateral sanctions that lack a basis in international law or the backing of the United Nations Security Council. Lin emphasized that such measures, which do not have global consensus, are not acceptable to China.
The legislation under consideration in the United States seeks to penalize the largest global buyers of Russian crude oil and natural gas, a group that prominently includes China. The bill reflects ongoing efforts by the U.S. to exert pressure on Russia through economic means, amid broader geopolitical tensions.
Lin also warned against the use of coercive measures and double standards, suggesting that these approaches would be ineffective and ultimately detrimental. He underscored China’s disapproval of what it sees as illegitimate unilateral sanctions, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to defending its economic interests on the international stage.
