China and the European Union have committed to deepening their trade cooperation and addressing economic tensions through dialogue following a series of high-level consultations in Beijing. This agreement was reached during the second meeting of the China-EU trade and investment consultation mechanism, co-chaired by Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao and European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maroš Šefčovič.

The discussions covered a range of significant issues, including trade imbalances, export controls, intellectual property rights, and electric vehicles, as well as the reform of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Both sides agreed on the importance of resolving disputes constructively and maintaining stable economic relations.

Specific measures discussed to improve trade relations include enhancing market access, strengthening trade monitoring, and exploring potential tariff reductions on certain goods under WTO rules. The talks also addressed regulatory concerns impacting sectors such as pharmaceuticals, medical devices, cosmetics, and agricultural products.

Electric vehicle trade emerged as a key topic, with both parties reviewing price undertakings related to the EU’s anti-subsidy case involving Chinese electric vehicles. They agreed to continue discussions aimed at addressing export control concerns, facilitating compliant trade, and maintaining stable global supply chains.

China and the EU expressed interest in expanding cooperation in emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, renewable energy, digital services, and green technology. Both parties also emphasized opportunities to increase mutual investment, calling for fair, transparent, and predictable business environments for companies operating in each other’s markets.

The consultations concluded with a mutual commitment to implement the agreed outcomes and continue negotiations. Plans include a ministerial-level video meeting in January 2027, followed by the third trade and investment consultation meeting in March 2027, signaling ongoing efforts to strengthen economic ties between the two regions.
