Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has called for diplomatic negotiations to resume between Iran and the United States, emphasizing the need for restraint amid ongoing tensions. During his talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Beijing, Wang highlighted that the conflict benefits neither country nor the broader international community.
Wang urged both nations to adhere to their existing memorandum of understanding and to reestablish a negotiation framework based on prior agreements. He also stressed the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open, ensuring that international shipping routes remain secure to support global energy and supply chains.
The Chinese foreign minister also appealed to regional countries to prevent the spread of tensions to Yemen and the Red Sea, advocating for disputes to be resolved through dialogue and negotiations. Stability in these regions is critical, Wang noted, for maintaining peace and security in the Middle East.
Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi expressed Iran’s willingness to return to diplomatic channels, asserting that while Tehran seeks to protect its national interests, it does not wish for the conflict to persist. He affirmed Iran’s recognition of the current US-Iran memorandum as valid and indicated readiness to collaborate with regional nations to enhance relations and security.
Araghchi welcomed China’s proposals aimed at bolstering peace and security in the Middle East and conveyed Iran’s eagerness to deepen cooperation with Beijing. The dialogue between the two foreign ministers underscores the significance of international efforts to mediate and resolve the tensions between the United States and Iran diplomatically.
