The United States has introduced substantial tariffs on certain drones and drone components, citing concerns over national security and the need to lessen reliance on foreign supply chains, especially those dominated by China. This new policy imposes a hefty 100% tariff on unmanned aircraft systems, specifically targeting larger drones that weigh over 25 kilograms and those with national security-related features like thermal cameras and docking stations. Smaller drones, on the other hand, will face a 25% tariff.
In addition to targeting Chinese products, the US will implement tariffs on drones and related components from several key trading partners. Imports from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan will be subject to a 15% tariff, while those from the United Kingdom will incur a 10% tariff. These tariffs apply provided the hardware, software, and technology originate from the listed countries or the US. Most of these tariffs are set to be enforced starting September 3.
The White House has stated that these measures aim to bolster the US defense and industrial base, stimulate domestic drone manufacturing, and create jobs within the country, all while reducing dependence on overseas suppliers. Currently, China holds a substantial share of the global drone market, with Shenzhen-based DJI being a prominent player in the US commercial drone sector. US authorities have expressed concerns that drones manufactured abroad could pose threats related to surveillance, sensitive data collection, and potential attacks.
Previously, the US Federal Communications Commission has also advocated for increased domestic production to mitigate these risks. The tariff decision unfolds amidst ongoing trade and technology tensions between Washington and Beijing, with China having recently imposed its own restrictions on drone exports to the US and taken actions against several American companies.
