China and Germany are deepening their business and technological collaborations, moving beyond a one-sided flow of expertise from Germany to China. This development was highlighted in a new joint research report unveiled at the China-Germany (China-Europe) Hidden Champions Forum 2026 in Beijing’s Shunyi district. The forum gathered over 400 business executives and representatives from both Europe and China, underscoring the growing interest in mutual cooperation.
The report reveals a notable trend among European companies, with a significant number planning to expand their operations in China. Specifically, 38 percent of surveyed European firms intend to boost their research and development investments in the country. Additionally, 40 percent are considering granting their Chinese branches more operational autonomy from their German headquarters. This shift indicates a strategic pivot towards leveraging China’s market and innovation potential.
Meanwhile, Chinese companies are also making strides in Germany, particularly in the automotive sector. Prominent electric vehicle manufacturers such as Li Auto and NIO have set up research and design centers in Germany, signifying a robust two-way exchange of technological expertise. This bilateral flow is reflective of the broader trend of increased collaboration across various sectors between the two nations.
The forum also launched a public service station aimed at assisting businesses in overcoming technical trade barriers. Furthermore, a new partnership initiative was introduced to encourage German and European companies to engage with Beijing’s economic and technological cooperation zone in Shunyi. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance economic ties and foster innovation through international partnerships.
Tang Wenhong emphasized Beijing’s commitment to further facilitating cooperation between Chinese and German companies. The city aims to attract more innovative businesses, reinforcing its position as a global hub for science and technology. This ongoing collaboration between China and Germany highlights a mutual interest in advancing shared goals in business and technology.
