China Increases Gold Reserves for 23rd Straight Month Amid Global Uncertainty

China’s central bank has increased its gold reserves for the 23rd month in a row, continuing a strategic accumulation amid ongoing global financial and geopolitical uncertainties. The People’s Bank of China reported an increase in its official gold holdings to 77.47 million ounces as of the end of September, up from 76.73 million ounces in August. This rise reflects an addition of approximately 740,000 ounces in September, surpassing the 650,000 ounces added in the previous month.

Despite the fluctuations in global gold prices, China’s sustained gold purchases are seen as a move to diversify its reserves and mitigate international financial and geopolitical risks. Analysts suggest that gold serves not only as a traditional hedge against inflation but also plays a crucial role in financial and geopolitical risk management for central banks. This accumulation is part of China’s broader efforts to bolster the credibility of its currency and support the gradual internationalization of the yuan.

China’s central bank is expected to continue adding to its gold reserves as part of its comprehensive reserve management strategy. This approach aligns with the country’s goals to stabilize its economic conditions and maintain a robust foundation for its foreign exchange reserves.

Meanwhile, China’s foreign exchange reserves saw a decline, standing at $3.4003 trillion at the end of September, down by $38.1 billion or 1.11% from the previous month. The reduction was attributed to changes in exchange rates and fluctuations in the prices of global financial assets, influenced by shifts in the global economic landscape and monetary policies. Despite this monthly decline, Chinese authorities maintain confidence in the country’s stable economic conditions, which they believe will ensure overall stability in its foreign exchange reserves.
