China Pushes for Peace as Iran-US War Enters Critical Diplomatic Phase

by admin477351

China stepped up its diplomatic engagement with the Iran-US conflict on Wednesday, with Foreign Minister Wang Yi holding separate calls with his Turkish and Egyptian counterparts to urge both sides toward dialogue. Wang told his Egyptian counterpart that signals from both Washington and Tehran offered a “glimmer of hope for peace.” The intervention reflected Beijing’s growing concern about the economic and geopolitical consequences of a prolonged conflict in a region critical to global energy supplies.

China’s diplomacy came on a day of intense but inconclusive activity. Iran rejected the US ceasefire proposal delivered through Pakistan, calling it unreasonable, and submitted its own five-point counter-demands. The US maintained that discussions were ongoing and productive. Multiple regional actors including Pakistan, Egypt, Turkey, and China were all working to keep channels open and push both parties toward a negotiating table.

Iran’s five demands — an end to attacks and assassinations, security guarantees, war reparations, and Strait of Hormuz control — represented a formidable set of preconditions. The Hormuz issue in particular sits at the intersection of Iran’s strategic interests and the global energy crisis, making it both the most important and the most difficult issue to resolve. Oil markets responded with cautious optimism to news of the diplomatic exchange before pulling back as the details became clearer.

Trump’s administration remained publicly committed to a resolution within its stated timeline, with the president reiterating his belief that Iranian leaders privately wanted a deal. He claimed his son-in-law Jared Kushner, special envoy Steve Witkoff, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Vice President JD Vance were all engaged in contact with Iranian counterparts. Iranian officials at the foreign ministry and in the military denied these contacts were taking place, adding to the fog surrounding the true state of negotiations.

The military situation continued to deteriorate. Israel struck Iran in multiple waves throughout Wednesday, while Iranian missiles and drones targeted Israel and Gulf states. Kuwait arrested six people in connection with an alleged Hezbollah assassination plot and saw its international airport damaged in an Iranian drone strike. The UN appealed for restraint, while the US continued building up its regional military presence. The intersection of Chinese diplomacy, American military pressure, and Iranian resistance made for an extraordinarily complex and unpredictable situation.
